At the point where rugged cliffs and vine-clad slopes force the River Ahr into narrow curves lies Altenahr with its surrounding villages Altenburg and Reimerzoven. Altenahr has long been a popular holiday destination on account of the exellence of its wine and the romantic grandeur of its scenery and today more than ever it offers a haven of peace to stressed city dwellers. The unique landscape can be explored on the "Red Wine Walking Trail" as well as a further 100km of marked footpaths. There is also a chair lift. The Langfigtal Nature Reserve holds rare flora and fauna while the ruine Are Castle (circa 1100), Kreuzberg Castle (14th C.) and the Romanesque Church (circa 1150) all bear witness to over 1.000 years of history.
